Gopher News Company began in 1902 as St. Marie’s Confectionaries and Groceries in St. Paul, MN. The product line included newspapers and theater programs. Prior to World War I, the first stack of newspapers and magazines were distributed to a street corner in St. Paul. During the ensuing years more corner stands, cigar stands and concessionaires were added to the magazine and newspaper “routes.” In the late 1930s paperback books were added to the mix.
From the 1940s to today, Gopher News Company has grown along with the regional growth of its retail customers. Gopher News Company has wisely established distribution hubs in locations that are geographically contiguous to the retail customers being served. This commitment to “being available” to accommodate the retailer’s service needs and to address the necessity of meeting the on-sale dates of magazines and books has continued to provide solid sales in Gopher News Company retail customer stores.
Gopher News Company’s management and staff continually assesses the proper blend of its products within each retail store, taking into account factors such as the store’s historical sales patterns, racking locations within the store and the evolving changes in the retailer customer demographics. Newer developments in technology have provided Gopher News Company employees and associates with cost effective equipment to quickly ascertain and respond to retailer stock levels, delivery and return status and compliance with publisher display requirements.
